According to a report by the United Nations, almost three planets’ worth of resources might be required to sustain our current lifestyle by 2050, when the population would have reached over 10 billion.
But luckily, we see almost all industries doing their part in making sure they conserve and protect the resources of the planet for future generations. And the printing industry is no different.
Sustainability in Printing:
Sustainability here indicates access to and use of natural resources in a way that fulfills economic and commercial needs while still conserving them for future generations.
From the materials or equipment used for printing and the printing process to the management of waste, there are several ways to stay sustainable in the printing industry.
Multivista’s Sustainability Initiative:
Every enterprise has its own sustainability goals, plans, and process to stay sustainable. At Multivista, our objective with sustainability (Economic, Ergonomic, and Social) is to uphold longevity, reduce manufacturing costs, and increase customer experience satisfaction. And this is how we work to achieve it:
Waste Management:
All of Multivista’s prints are “Made to order,” which minimizes paper and board wastage. The project was initiated in Nov 2021 with the goal to reduce current wastage from 4% to 3% by 2022. We are also currently recycling all paper/board/plate wastes.
We also invest in new state-of-the-art accessories and equipment like inline spectrophotometers, automated make-ready processes, Ink presetting, etc.., which has helped us reduce paper and board waste by 1%.
Wastewater Management:
We have increased the efficiency of the STP plant, which has enabled us to use more water effectively for sustainable agricultural practices. The project is initiated to increase from current treated water usage of 5000 sq. ft of greenery to 8000 sq. ft of greenery, as an effort to protect our natural resources and bring balance to biodiversity.
Optimizing Water Consumption:
In addition to managing the wastewater, Multivista has also implemented a project to optimize water consumption by effectively monitoring water usage at different stages of production activities. This includes installing a water meter to measure and monitor water usage and piston-based taps to reduce water consumption. These methods have helped us reduce water conception by 5%.
Optimizing Dampening System Consumption:
The Dampening system uses 4900 liters of water per month, 140 liters of fountain solution per month, and 20 liters of IPA per month. Multivista has optimized the dampening process and related accessories with an aim to reduce the dampening system consumption by 5% in 2024.
Renewable Energy:
Multivista conducts an energy audit annually to find out possible areas of energy leakage/loss. We have also replaced the pneumatic air compressor with a screw compressor that will reduce the total energy consumed by 10%.
In addition to that, 72% of total energy consumption is from
renewable energy – wind. And we have also initiated the process of insulating solar panels and restructuring illumination and ventilation, which will be completed and ready in motion by 2025.
Other Eco-friendly Initiatives:
It can be challenging to promote green practices in the printing industry, given that paper is one of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution. And the industry often gets a bad rep due to it.
However, it is not an impossible feat. At Multivista, we use eco-friendly organic base inks for all the prints and follow an eco-friendly finishing process.
We are also certified for FSC for over five years and advocate the usage of FSC-certified paper and board for printing. And we constantly engage with the local community to promote the usage of FSC-certified papers and responsible consumerism. With the support of our community and our customers, we plan to move from the current level of usage of 60% FSC paper to 90% by 2023-24.
